《面纱》:伪爱情故事
版权归作者所有,任何形式转载请联系作者。作者:waking王小心(来自豆瓣)来源:https://movie.douban.com/review/8122131/ 看《面纱》这部电影有快十年了。还记得在五道口电影院和TN一起看的时候,深深被爱德华·诺顿文质彬彬的完美知识分子形象折服,并感叹凯蒂为什么不能爱上一个这么帅的男人。爱德华·诺顿为这部电影准备了多年,电影也拍成了令人信服的爱情故事,从最初的不理解、出轨,到患难中的感情升华,宗教信念,到最后的生离死别,观众是跟着电影中的感情线走的,没有人不相信,凯蒂最后没有爱上她的丈夫,并为他的信仰守候了一生。 十年之后,把毛姆的原著小说《面纱》重读了一遍,这才发现,在原著中,凯蒂从始至终都没有爱上沃特。正如影片中、也是书中的台词所说,凯蒂推心置腹地向沃特说道:“我就是这样长大的……我宁愿去桑威治打高尔夫球,而不是那些博物馆、名画……”所以,极其可惜的是,虽然她为沃特的情怀和牺牲精神所深深折服,她也无法爱上沃特。到最后她对沃特的感情,更像是信徒对圣徒的崇拜。书中不厌其烦地描写她在修道院做工的情节,与贵族出身的院长嬷嬷的交往,也是在用作者看来更崇高、更超我的哲学冲淡男女之间的感情。而沃特对凯蒂的感情,是肉体上的爱带着怨恨。他爱凯蒂,像一个男人爱女人鲜艳的容貌、活泼的性格一样地爱,但他们在生活方式、兴趣爱好上是无法交流的,在他们最和谐的时候也无法交流;他们的灵魂是无法对话的。这也说明为什么沃特要带凯蒂去湄潭府,这是种狭隘的报复和嫉妒。 最能清楚地说明这一点,也最震撼的地方是沃特死的时候,他仅有的遗言是:“死的那个是狗。”这句话脱口而出,对古典文学一无所知的凯蒂并不能理解它的意思。这句话其实出自《挽歌》:一个善良的人救了一只狗,最后狗因为一己私欲(和人一样)咬伤这个善人,所有人谴责这只狗疯了,并坚信善人会死,但最后善人痊愈了,而狗死了。他是带着负罪感死去的,报复和折磨凯蒂的负罪死去的。“我经历了一段坎坷的路途,但现在已经全好了。”死亡对他来说是解脱,而非折磨。多么讽刺,如果是爱情电影的话,最后不应该说“我爱你”或者至少”我原谅你”吗?在他看来,需要被原谅的那个人是他,而这原谅是人性上的,而非感情上的。 人性,而非感情,是毛姆的小说中一直在探讨的话题。在短篇小说《爱德华 巴纳尔德的堕落》中,他就旗帜鲜明地提出这一点。他所探究的不是优裕的生活、鲜艳的容貌、完美的爱情,而是在这些都不复存在之后生活的意义。他让主人公过上高更式的生活,远离尘嚣,到无人知晓的小岛上去,在那里领略生活真正的意义,与传统上五子登科的成功背道而驰,并认为这才是超越自我的成功。从这个意义上讲,他的小说更是哲学和寓言故事。
